The Safest Cars of 2016
Cars today, overall, are safer than at any point in history. Not only does each vehicle go through significant research to develop the safest design, they undergo major testing of the final product. In addition to their own internal testing, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) performs two independent tests to determine safety. First, they test crash avoidance and mitigation, and secondly, actual crash testing. These two tests allow them to determine what cars are the absolute safest cars on the road. 2016, has been a great year for cars with dozens noted on the highest rated TSP+ (top safety pick+) list.

Safest Cars: Mini/Small
If nothing else, 2016 proved that smaller sized cars can be incredibly safely designed. This year there were 14 different 2016 vehicles that met TSP+ requirements in the mini to small category. These cars include: Mini Cooper; Scion iA; Acura ILX; Honda Civic (both 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan); Lexus CT 200h; Mazda 3; Nissan Sentra; Subaru Crosstrek (plus the Impreza and WRX); Toyota Prius; and both the Volkswagen Golf and GTI.
Safest Cars: Midsize
Midsize cars continue to make up a large portion of the cars on the road. This year’s safest cars include 18 different vehicles that achieve TSP+ rankings. The midsize list includes: Audi A3; BMW 2; Chevrolet Malibu; Chrysler 200; Honda Accord (both 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan); Hyundai Sonata; Kia Optima; Lexus ES350; Mazda 6; Nissan’s Altima and Maxima; Subaru’s Legacy and Outback; Toyota Camry, both the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat; and Volvo’s S60 and V60.
Safest Cars: Large
The majority of large cars that met TSP+ ranking were luxury vehicles, however one non-luxury made the list: The Toyota Avalon. The rest, all luxury large cars, include: Acura RLX, Audi A6, Hyundai Genesis, Infinity Q70, Lexus RC, Mercedes E-Class and the Volvo S80.
Safest Cars: SUVs
SUVs are rapidly becoming the most popular new cars. Not only do they offer versatility in meeting your needs, but they are some of the safest cars on the road. Whether you’re a family of 5 traveling across the country, or a bachelor who needs space for his hockey equipment, SUVs fit the bill. Buying a small, midsize or large ultimately depends on how you’ll use it. Here is the full list of highest safety rated SUVs for 2016.
- AcuraMDX and RDX
- HondaCRV and Pilot
- Hyundai Tucson
- LexusNX and RX
- MazdaCX3 and CX5

Safest Cars: Trucks/Minivans
Interestingly, while there are TSP ranked Minivans and Trucks, there are none that rank TSP+. That’s not to say that they are unsafe, but when tested by the IIHS they did not meet the highest safety standards to warrant being a top safety pick+. The three safest of all 2016 are the Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona and the Ford F-150.
