Distance Travelled: The more you’re on the road, the more likely you are to get in an accident. Those who drive more will pay more than those who commute less often.

Is car insurance mandatory for those who live in Barrie, Ontario?

Yes, car insurance is mandatory in Barrie. The province of Ontario has a standard Auto Insurance Policy that every company must offer. The provincial government put this in place to give all drivers and their loved one’s basic protection for their vehicle insurance, although there are many add-on options you can consider for additional coverage. Basic coverage may not always be enough, and we can discuss more options with you in detail to ensure your policy is suitable for your needs. Those caught without mandatory auto insurance will be fined, and their licence may be suspended as a result. Your vehicle can be impounded as well, so it’s a serious offence not to have basic car insurance.

Why is car insurance so expensive in Barrie?

Ontario is a densely populated area, especially when compared to other provinces and territories. This means there is a higher likelihood of claims, which is why insurance rates are higher in Ontario cities. Additionally, auto insurance fraud is also higher in Ontario than in any other part of the country, which is another reason why insurance in Ontario is so expensive. The city of Barrie is affected by these statistics, and that’s why drivers pay more for their car insurance.

Barrie Collision Reporting and Claims Process

Being involved in a car accident can be shock-inducing and extremely scary. Knowing what to do when an accident occurs can be really helpful and save you as much stress as possible. This is isure’s guide to postaccident management in Barrie:

1. Are there any injuries? If there are, call 911.

You might be shocked when it first happens, but your number one priority is the safety of yourself, passengers, and the other vehicle’s driver and passengers. If anyone has any kind of injury, it will likely require medical attention. Call 911 and wait for medical attention.

2. Take lots of pictures

After addressing anything that requires medical attention, you should take lots of pictures. It’s also suggested that you do not move the vehicles before doing so, if possible. Pictures will serve as proof for insurance company claims and any legal issues that may arise later. The more information and photo evidence, the better!

  • Take a picture of all the damages

Take pictures of your car, the other car, and be sure to take note of every bump and scratch that happened as a result of the accident. Make sure that you also take a picture of the license plate for each vehicle involved in the accident

  • Take photos of the other person’s driver’s licence

Take a picture of the other person’s driver’s license so there is a record of who they are, their license number, and their address. This is a great time to get the driver’s contact information, as well.

  • Take photo of the other driver’s insurance slip

Take a picture of the other driver’s insurance policy, or at the very least, get their provider’s name and policy number. This way you and your insurance company can secure proof in the event that you need to file a claim or you can no longer contact the other driver.

  • When and where

While this is not necessarily a picture, note the time of day, location, and weather when the accident took place and where.

3. Head to a collision reporting centre

Your next step following the exchange of information is to make your way to the collision reporting centre. You are required by law to visit the reporting centre within 24 hours of the accident. Driving your car after an accident is not recommended. Call a tow truck driver after an accident to transport your car to a mechanic and a taxi or friend to take you to the collision reporting centre. This is the location and hours of a Barrie collision reporting centre. If an accident happens outside these hours, head there at the earliest point you can.

Accidents do happen, and insurance is there for a reason. In case a situation occurs, insurance is your security to cover large expenses, like repairs. Some insurance policies will also cover other expenses, such as tow trucks, car rentals, and inspections.
