Driving requires your full attention, and unless you are concentrating on the road, you can end up in a terrible accident. Even skilled and experienced drivers can get into trouble and while some mistakes may be minor, others can affect your life and that of other innocent drivers. For these reasons, it is crucial to stay safe by avoiding the following dangerous driving habits:
1. Driving under the influence
This is a very obvious one but drunk driving still kills thousands of people a year and is one of the most dangerous things a driver can do. Alcohol and drugs will affect your ability to drive and the consequences can be deadly. In addition to causing harm to yourself and others, you may also lose your driver’s license and your freedom because a DUI conviction comes with serious consequences, including the possibility of jail time. In order to stay safe, you must never drive while under the influence and must consider other options, like a cab or public transportation.
2. Texting and driving
Cell phones are a normal part of our everyday lives but should not be a part of your driving routine. Texting while driving can increase your risk of being involved in an accident because you have to take your attention off the road and this is a very dangerous habit. Your eyes should focus on the road and your cell phone screen should not be a distraction as you can hit objects, other cars or pedestrians. Place your phone out of reach so that it does not become a distraction and answer your text messages after you arrive safely at your destination.
3. Distracted driving
Texting is not the only thing that can shift your focus as eating, make-up application and listening to loud music are all considered distractions as well. All of these habits can lead to deadly consequences, so if you need to do something that is going to distract you from the road, it is best to pull over so that you and others are safe.
4. Road rage
Drivers often find themselves in frustrating situations and no matter how aggravating a situation is, you must remain calm. Aggressive driving is extremely dangerous and can cause you to get into an accident. Driving recklessly, erratic lane changes and ignoring traffic laws are all examples of dangerous driving caused by road rage. It may even lead to violence while you’re on the road, so it is always best to remain calm and to practice courteous driving.
This is all too common but it is a very easy problem to solve because all you have to do is follow the speed limit and this will decrease your chances of being involved in an accident. It’s often tempting to drive fast but the risks are not worth it.
