With the introduction of Apple’s latest iPhone operating system, iOS 11, they included a new feature aimed at preventing distracted driving. While the best system for preventing distracted driving is you having the self-control to avoid your phone, this new feature will help. If you’re looking for ways to avoid distracted driving, make sure to read these tips to stop distracted driving ! The new iOS feature is called “Do Not Disturb”.
WHAT IS IOS 11’S DO NOT DISTURB FEATURE?
The new Do Not Disturb feature is one that, as the name says, does not disturb you when you are driving. When activated, the system detects when you are driving and limits distracting notifications. The suppressed notices include calls, text messages, email and other notifications. The way it works is quite simple. First, it uses the internal accelerometer to determine roughly how fast you are going. The second way it determines your speed is based on passing Wi-Fi connections. If it goes out of range quickly that tells the system you are driving. Third, it uses the internal GPS to determine if you are driving.
Now, that said, if you are driving and you want to be able to use hands-free driving features such as Bluetooth calls, you can. It’s a setting you can change, aimed at encouraging you to use them – while also avoiding distracted driving. If you’re a passenger in the car, you can disable the Do Not Disturb option and use the phone as you normally would. If you use Siri, you will still be able to access information but it won’t provide you with the visual element. It is worth noting that alarms, emergency alerts, and timers do not get suppressed by the Do Not Disturb feature.
WHY THE NEW DO NOT DISTURB FEATURE IS IMPORTANT
Distracted driving is becoming one of the biggest issues on the road. Ontario recently announced the plan for harsher penalties for distracted drivers. The existing rules are already quite severe. What it comes down to though is you are 23-times more likely to be in an accident when you are distracted by your phone – even for a few seconds. In that short period of time, your risk skyrockets and you become a danger to yourself and others. No text message is as important as the safety of yourself and others around you.
If you are caught distracted driving, you will face the consequences in that moment via a fine and/or demerit points. But, the effects can be long-lasting. If you get many distracted driving convictions, you could be a high risk driver. With that classification, insurance premiums will be much higher and harder to get. For the safety of yourself, others and your bank account – don’t let a distraction impact you. Turn on the Do Not Disturb feature on your iOS device or access a similar service on Android! Stay safe!
WHAT KIND OF INVENTORY DO YOU KEEP?
It may be easier to add expensive equipment and inventory to your existing home insurance. However, if you need to insure it separately for business purposes, or have a mix of on-premises and off-premises inventory, you should consider home-based business insurance. A home-based business policy would also insure you against any loses that would interrupt your business for a period.
ARE YOU A CONSULTANT THAT DOES NOT RELATE TO ANY OF THE PREVIOUS POINTS?
Even if inventory, employees and visiting clients have nothing to do with your home-based business, you would want to consider Errors and Omissions insurance (otherwise known as Professional Liability Insurance) for coverage of contractual liabilities.
In most cases you would want to consult your insurance broker for advice on the type of insurance that best meets your needs.
An important point to remember is that when conducting business in your home, there is an increased chance of losses. To protect you, your family and your business ensure your home-based business and residence are properly covered.
