isure’s spring-cleaning checklist for your home
The sun is shining. Snow is melting. Birds are chirping. Spring is here!
With the spring thaw comes spring-cleaning. It’s time to inspect your home and make sure it’s in tiptop shape. To help you out, here is our spring-cleaning checklist with 8 common areas to check.
Wind, water, sliding ice, and falling objects are all winter hazards that could damage your roof. Check for loose or lost shingles or other visible damage.
The foundation & exterior
Walk around your home to look for hairline cracks in the foundation and peeling paint. This is also a good opportunity to inspect for any holes that could let potential critters into your home.
Heavy ice can clog and separate gutters. Inspect and clean gutters and down-pipes, and ensure water drains away from walls and foundation.
Faucets & water damage
Water damage is a top concern when winter snow melts. Look for visible water damage on your interior and exterior walls. If you’re opening your pool, check outside hose faucets for water pressure as well as potential water leaks into your home. If you find any leaks, take care of it as soon as possible to avoid more potential damage.
Damp conditions, such as flooding or leaks, can produce toxic mould. If you suspect mould growth in your home, or just want to do a preventive check to find potential areas, you can purchase your own mould kit or hire a professional to conduct an inspection.
Trees and shrubbery
Trees, bushes, and other shrubbery are a great look to brighten up your home. Just make sure that there aren’t any over-hanging branches that could fall onto your roof or break your windows.
With no more snow to shovel, it’s time to check the condition of your driveway. Just like roads, when water freezes on your driveway, it expands and develops cracks. This can create breaks or potholes on your driveway. Consider re-paving or re-laying brick on your driveway to curb additional damage.
Clean windows and window tracks, look for cracks, and check to see if sliding doors are working properly.
