FAQs About Toronto Auto Insurance

What are the factors that affect auto insurance in Toronto?

Your Age: Drivers with more experience on the road often pay much lower auto insurance premiums than newer and younger drivers.

Type of Vehicle: The year, make and model of your vehicle will be used by auto insurance companies when they calculate the premium.

How You Use The Vehicle: The way you drive your vehicle, how often and your driving habits can all play a role in your insurance rate.

Your Postal Code: The more populated, urban areas in Toronto often have a higher claim rate than rural parts. Urban residents can likely expect to pay a higher premium based on their postal code.

Your Vehicle: Aside from the make, model, and year of your vehicle, frequency of theft and safety rating. Certain types of vehicles tend to be a higher risk, as they are shown to be involved in more accidents than others.

Your Age And Sex: It generally follows that older people have had more years of opportunity to learn proper driving habits. Men under 25 are also statistically more prone to crashes than women of the same age, and generally receive higher premiums, but generally evens out after turning 25 years old.

Distance Travelled: The more you’re on the road, the more likely you are to get in an accident. Those who drive more will pay more than those who commute less often.

Your Driving History: If you have had a lot of traffic tickets or major accidents in your time, auto insurance will be much more expensive for you when compared to others with a clean driving record.

What are Tips for Driving in Toronto?

Toronto is a large, busy city, which is why isure is here to provide you with some important driving tips.

We remind our clients that while sharing the road may not always be fun, it is something you are required to do as a licensed driver. That also means being a responsible driver is always a must.

One main component to be cautious of in the downtown streets are streetcars. Rule number one: you cannot pass one if it is stopped. Most streetcars will stop at every intersection so that passengers can get on and off, and you must pay attention to this aspect whenever you are driving downtown. Simply put, when a streetcar stops, every car behind them must stop. It is also important that you do not drive into streetcar tunnels, so extra caution and attention must be paid when navigating the streets of Toronto. Always look at the transit signage and follow the rules.

There are many cyclists in Toronto, so be extremely careful when you are driving in the city. This is especially true when making a right turn or opening your car door, so double-check to ensure there are no cyclists in your blind spot. You need to be aware of your surroundings and must never stop in bike lanes. It’s also necessary that you keep three feet distance when passing a cyclist in your car, as this is the law.

Be aware of busy intersections during rush hour. Knowing what to expect will eliminate stressful situations, and you may be able to find alternative routes. Certain intersections become very congested during rush hour, so you should know this information in advance so that you can adjust your route, if possible.

What are the Most dangerous roads in Toronto?

Road safety in Toronto is a concern for many people

Toronto, Ontario, reports more than 70,000 road collisions and more than 25,000 injured drivers per year. Many drivers can use some help from isure with our competitive rates and excellent service.

We’ve compiled a list of the worst streets in Toronto, plus some tips on navigating them safely.

Worst streets in Toronto

Queen Street is at the top of the list, with 159 pedestrian KSI (Killed or Seriously Injured) collisions. Following that street is Eglinton with 150, then Finch, Lawrence, and Yonge as the rest of Toronto’s top five most dangerous roads. Next, Dundas, Bathurst, Sheppard, Steeles and King remain close hotspots, where many pedestrian KSIs occur. Out of the top ten streets, King Street is the only street with less than 100 KSIs.

Is it possible to lower the cost of your car insurance in Toronto?

Auto insurance rates in Ontario are some of the highest in Canada. In Toronto specifically, the average is over $2,000 per year! This cost translates to just over $170/month. Here at isure, we value cost transparency, which is why we are sharing how you can lower your monthly premium cost.

Why your auto insurance is high

Auto insurance costs are determined by your provider based on how statistically likely your driver profile is to get into an accident or have to make a claim. The more likely you are to file a claim, the higher your insurance premium will be. Here are a few key factors that will partially determine your insurance cost:

Age

How old you are generally gives providers an idea of your driving experience and level of comfort. Additionally, younger drivers are more likely to get into an accident than mature drivers. Insurance costs tend to level out at around age 30 and typically get lower, so long as you keep a clean driving record.

Gender

Believe it or not, men will usually pay more in insurance costs than female drivers. Based on statistics once again, men usually have a higher chance of driving recklessly and needing to file a claim.

How to get cheap Car Insurance in Toronto

Getting cheaper car insurance is one way you can lower your monthly expenses and save for more important things on your list! Here are a couple ways isure recommends that you can save on insurance each month:

1. Bundle

Did you know that by bundling your car and home insurance, you can save a few hundred dollars? When you bundle with the same provider, they will be more likely to offer you a great discount. When you talk to a broker at isure, make sure to mention that you want to bundle your policies!

2. Pay all at once

When you pay your insurance cost for the year upfront, you may also save some money. Depending on the provider, they could offer you two different rates: one for the year and one per month. If you do the math, you might find that you will save when you pay the year’s costs upfront.

Looking for a great Toronto insurance policy? Make a quick call to the expert brokers at isure to get started on crafting your perfect policy for less! Our team has access to a wide variety of insurance providers, and will shop at different rates to find you the best deal on your Toronto car insurance. Fill out a form or call now for your free quote!

3. Anti-theft Devices

Any tools or equipment that prevents theft or vandalism to your vehicle can lower your insurance premium.

4. Winter Tires

The winters in Toronto can be relentless, especially when you need to drive to school or work in the snow every day! Not only is it vital for your safety to have winter tires installed during the snowy months, but you are often eligible for discounts on insurance premiums when your car has winter tires.

Which areas/postal codes have the highest and lowest premiums?

The M6M area has the highest average premium in Toronto, so those whose postal code starts with this combination will pay a higher rate, on average. This is known as the former City of York and includes the Mount Dennis, Silverthorne, and Del Ray neighbourhoods. The postal code with the lowest average premium is the M5K area, which encompasses a small part of the downtown Toronto area. This is the area on Wellington Street between York and Bay, and those with this postal code will typically pay a lower rate.

How do the insurance rates in Toronto compare to other cities?

This may come as a surprise to some, but Toronto is not first on Ontario’s list of top cities with the highest car insurance rates. While it does have a high overall average, Brampton is the city where you will find the highest auto insurance premiums, followed by North York, Mississauga, Scarborough and Toronto.

Car insurance in Toronto is higher than the provincial average because densely populated cities that have lots of road traffic have higher than average auto insurance premiums. This is a result of high probability when it comes to theft and collision, which is more likely to occur in a city like Toronto when compared to smaller towns. This is simply a fact because of the population size. In Ontario, Ottawa and Kingston offer much cheaper insurance rates in comparison because these cities are less populous than Toronto.

Why is car insurance so expensive for those who live in Toronto?

Insurance companies will base your rates on numerous factors, including driving history and high traffic volumes. They will also consider how likely you are to make a claim and look at traffic congestion, a big problem in Toronto. The 401 is one of the busiest highways in the world! It runs straight through the city of Toronto and there are tons of cars on the road, meaning there is a higher risk for accidents to occur. This will result in more claims, which will drive up your insurance costs.

Do traffic tickets affect my Toronto Auto Insurance?

Yes, although not immediate, having a paid traffic ticket on your driving record can have an effect on your insurance rates the next time you renew your auto insurance.

Toronto Collision Reporting and Claims Process

Toronto is the most populated city in Canada and welcomes thousands of commuters each and every day. With busy streets, accidents are bound to happen. In order for drivers to pay for accident repairs, they must file a report at a Toronto collision reporting centre, then file a claim with their insurance company. To properly report an accident, there are a few steps that need to be taken and a lot of information that needs to be collected. To simplify the process, isure has come up with a collision reporting guide for Toronto.

1. Check for injuries

Your number one priority is to make sure everyone involved in the accident is okay. If anyone involved needs medical attention, call 911 right away. Accident injuries can be very serious and not calling an ambulance immediately can add to the severity of the injury

2. Take photos

Seriously, take a lot of photos. Photos quickly capture more than enough information and crystalize the scene of an accident long after it has been cleaned up. Taking pictures can simplify the information-fetching portion of collision reporting, as well. Take pictures of the following four things in particular:

  • Damages

Take photos of any and all damage. Be sure to capture all vehicles involved and their corresponding damage. This way, you prove the extent of the damage and the way the scene is set up will typically provide contextual information to the situation.

  • License

Taking a picture of a driver’s license captures the information needed to report an accident without writing anything down. This can improve accuracy and also speed up on-scene activity.

  • Insurance

An exchange of insurance information takes place following every accident. It is a standard that this is shared so that you can both accurately file a claim and communicate. A quick photo is all that’s needed to capture the insurance provider, policy number, make, model, and year of the car.

  • Details

Note down all the details of the accident. Details include the time, date, and location of an accident. These are needed for filling out reports; however, noting additional details, such as weather and road conditions, can provide a better understanding for insurance companies.

3. When you need to report

You need to report an accident that is over $2,000 of damage to the authorities. Accidents that you want to file a claim for also need to be reported within a 24hour window. It is illegal to not follow these rules after an accident.

4. Reporting a car accident in Toronto

To report a car accident in Toronto, you need to head over to one of two different locations mentioned below, fill out a report and have your damage checked by a staff member. After which, you can file a claim with your insurance company to repair damages or come up with the proper replacements. Driving a car that was just in an accident is not recommended. Instead, call a tow truck for your car and a friend or Uber to get yourself to a collision reporting centre. In Toronto, the two reporting locations are as follows:

NORTH COLLISION REPORTING CENTRE

Address: 113 Toryork Drive, North York

Phone Number: 416-808-3960

Hours: Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday & Sunday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

EAST COLLISION REPORTING CENTRE

Address: 39 Howden Road, Scarborough

Phone Number: 416-808-4960

Hours: Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday & Sunday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

What will insurance cover?

Insurance may cover any number of things – it really depends on accident specifics and coverage outlined in your policy. To determine your exact coverage, call isure today and speak with one of our brokers. Typical insurance policies cover bodily injuries, property damage, and car repairs. Some policies cover more than basics, allocating funds for rental cars, tow trucks, and taxis.
