When walking down the street, remember to be safe. Even when you feel yourself going into autopilot while getting to your destination, there are specific safety measures you should always keep in mind. In this article, we will break down some of those pedestrian safety tips and answer some frequently asked questions about pedestrian safety and right of way.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

1. Use Crosswalks at Intersections

Firstly, you must never forget to cross the street at the marked crosswalks, intersections, or other places where drivers expect pedestrians. Moreover, try to avoid crossing in the middle of a block or between parked cars, because visibility is often limited.

2. Stay Visible

Next, it is crucial to stay visible, especially at night. Try to wear bright or reflective clothing when walking at night or in low-light conditions.

3. Avoid Distractions

Another one of our pedestrian safety tips is to avoid any distractions. Make sure to stay off your phone and remove your earbuds when crossing the street. This way, you are fully alert and ready to catch any potential hazards.

4. Make Eye Contact with Drivers

Before stepping into the road, make eye contact with approaching drivers. Not only does this key in the driver that you are there, but it also ensures they see you are there will have ample time to slow down or stop.

5. Follow Traffic Signals/Signs

Lastly, ensure you are following all pedestrian signals/signs. Regardless of whether the road looks clear, it is safest to wait for the “walk” signal before crossing.

What Should Pedestrians Do Before Crossing the Road?

While this may seem like common knowledge, it is always important to have a refresher. Here are some pedestrian safety tips you should remember:

  • Make eye contact with drivers
  • Wait for vehicles to come to a complete stop
  • Use the designated crosswalks/intersections when possible
  • Look both ways before crossing the road
  • Avoid any distractions while crossing

Pedestrian Safety, FAQs

What is a Pedestrian Crossover? (PXO)

A Pedestrian Crossover, or a PXO, is a designated crosswalk that allows pedestrians to cross roads without traffic signals nearby safely. These crosswalks have overhead yellow lights that warn drivers and cyclists that pedestrians will be crossing at that point. Moreover, when the lights are flashing, this means that pedestrians are currently crossing, and drivers must yield to the pedestrians’ right-of-way.

Who Has the Right of Way at a Crosswalk?

At a crosswalk, pedestrians have the right of way as soon as they step onto the crosswalk. Drivers then must come to a complete stop and wait until pedestrians have fully crossed the lane. However, keep in mind that depending on the signage at the crosswalk, you may have to wait until pedestrians cross all the lanes.

Do Pedestrians Always Have the Right of Way?

Not always, no. Like drivers, pedestrians must also follow traffic signs and signals. A pedestrian’s right-of-way is also only applicable when pedestrians cross visibly and legally. For example, crossing during a red “do not cross” signal is unsafe and illegal, and doesn’t give pedestrians the right-of-way.

What is Jaywalking?

Jaywalking is when a pedestrian crosses a street outside of the designated crossing areas, such as in the middle of a block. To jaywalk is highly discouraged and is often illegal. Not only is it unsafe because it increases the cases of collision, but also because it disrupts the flow of traffic. To stay safe, pedestrians should cross at the corners and marked crosswalks.

Can You Pass Vehicles at a Crosswalk?

No. It is extremely dangerous and illegal to pass any vehicle while it is stopped at a marked crosswalk or a PXO. Remember that if a vehicle is stopped at a crosswalk, it’s likely because there’s a pedestrian you can’t see.

Can Cyclists Use Crosswalks?

Yes, however, cyclists cannot ride their bikes across crosswalks and PXOs. If you are riding a bike, make sure to dismount and walk across to avoid confusing drivers.

What Are Some Pedestrian Safety Tips for Walking in Poor Visibility?

Here are a few tips for pedestrians walking at night or in low visibility. Firstly, wear bright or reflective clothing, or use a flashlight/phone light to ensure you are visible. Also, it is crucial in poor visibility to stay on sidewalks and cross only at designated crosswalks. Also, if possible, face the traffic when walking on the road shoulders without a crosswalk.

Who is At Fault in a Pedestrian-Vehicle Collision?

Drivers often carry a greater responsibility in the case of a pedestrian-vehicle collision. While each case is unique, Ontario law tends to assume driver liability unless proven otherwise. This is especially true when the collision occurs within marked crosswalks or school zones

By following these pedestrian safety tips, you can reduce the risk of accidents and help keep everyone safe on the road. Whether you are walking to work, school, or just taking a stroll in the neighbourhood, these simple tips can make all the difference.
