Insurance is one of those things many people believe they will never need, until they do. Every year, many Ontarians choose to go without coverage, underestimate the risks they face, or assume that a disaster could never happen to them. The consequences of being uninsured can be life-changing, turning what might have been a manageable setback into a massive financial crisis.

To better understand why people go uninsured, the misconceptions that lead to risky decisions, and the real-world impact of being without protection, we spoke with an experienced insurance broker from here at isure who has witnessed firsthand the stories, struggles, and lessons that often follow when insurance is absent.

Going Uninsured: The Misconceptions

The world of insurance is full of misconceptions, and as an insurance broker, Avelino Bobadilla has heard them all. Bobadilla has been an insurance broker with isure Insurance for just over 5 years now, with 10 years in the industry altogether. Throughout his time, he has heard his fair share of misconceptions about insurance.

“The most common misconception that bugs me is that insurance is a scam. It’s one you hear all the time.”

Bobadilla takes it back to before he worked in the industry, when he thought the same.

“I got into my first accident two years before I came into the industry. When that happened, I was scared to use insurance; I was scared my rates would go up.” Bobadilla explained. “I learned quickly about how much I was covered for, for example, the rental vehicle to use while my car was being repaired.”

It’s true, parts of your insurance, such as Liability, can not only help you but also save you thousands or even millions in medical bills, vehicle repairs, and legal costs. Optional insurance, such as collision coverage, can help you save even more.

“You realize how important insurance is when you end up needing it,” Bobadilla stated.

Why Are People Opting Out Of Insurance?

When driving the streets of Ontario, being uninsured is a gamble. From legal troubles to life-changing financial ruin, the costs of going uninsured far outweigh any savings you may have on premiums. However, many still choose to do so. It is estimated that over 400,000 drivers in Ontario are on the roads uninsured. So why is this the case?

“There is a lot of misinformation floating around about insurance. Misinformation that you don’t understand until you actually get into that situation. People talk to their friends or family before going to a broker,” Bobadilla explains. “I wouldn’t give dental advice because I’m not a dentist. I wouldn’t go to my friends for insurance advice if they don’t work in the field.”

According to Bobadilla, many people are unaware of the components that accompany an accident, such as liability.

“You’re left on the hook for the other driver, and if you’re uninsured, you’ll be paying out of pocket. There are other costs as well, such as fire truck or ambulance charges, not to mention the cost of fixing your own vehicle, and god forbid if someone gets hurt.”

What Are The Consequences Of Going Uninsured?

Having been in the industry for so long, Bobadilla has his fair share of stories about people going uninsured.

“I have one really sad story. A person passed away in a car accident without insurance, and their Mom was on the hook for the total loss of the vehicle,” Bobadilla explained. “This, on top of the funeral costs and arrangements, is having to deal with that while grieving. It’s just a really sad situation.”

According to Bobadilla, this shows that when you drive without insurance, you’re doing much more than just putting yourself at risk.

Going without insurance can be detrimental not only to you, but also to those around you. Unfortunately, consequences can also stem from being underinsured. Many people also choose to get the least amount of insurance possible, which can lead to other troubling situations.

“I had an instance where I was speaking to a client and asking if they were sure they didn’t want collision and comprehensive coverage,” Bobadilla stated. “I remember them saying they didn’t because they were a good driver. Down the line, the client ended up getting into an at-fault accident in his expensive new Acura. You might think you’re a good driver, but stuff happens.”

What Happens If You Don’t Have Home Insurance?

Nowadays, nearly 99% of Canadians who own homes have some form of property insurance. However, up to 80% of homeowners are either completely underinsured or dangerously underinsured. To add to this, roughly 10% of homes in Canada are uninsurable due to extreme environmental factors such as high flood risks.

“A lot of people don’t realize that it’s not just your home you’re risking. It’s your belongings, your home contents, serious documents such as passports and memorabilia. If a fire or flood occurs, those things are just gone.”

According to Bobadilla, it’s something not enough people talk about.

“Even being underinsured is a real thing; some people think they don’t need all of that coverage and choose to reduce it to the cheapest so that they can save on premiums.”

Beyond protecting the physical structure of your home, going uninsured can leave you without critical financial protection in the event of unexpected events. Many homeowners underestimate the true cost of rebuilding a property after a major loss. Construction costs, labour shortages, building code updates, and material price increases can significantly increase the cost of restoring a home. Without adequate coverage, homeowners may be forced to pay tens of thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of dollars out of pocket.

With extreme weather events becoming more frequent across Canada, the importance of proper coverage has never been greater. Flooding, windstorms, ice damage, and other weather-related incidents can cause extensive damage in a matter of hours. While many homeowners assume these events are unlikely to affect them, insurance brokers regularly see claims from people who never expected to experience a loss. Having the right coverage in place can mean the difference between a temporary setback and a long-term financial situation.

Never Go Uninsured

When it comes to navigating life uninsured, take it from someone in the business: it is never worth it.

“Whenever I’m on the phone with someone who is threatening to go underinsured, I like to use a personal touch. I let them know that I’ve been in certain situations that would have occurred differently if I were underinsured.”

Bobadilla believes that in some cases, these people need to have a bit of fear and understand the repercussions of going uninsured. At the same time, he believes it is important to empathize, put it in a positive light, and remind them that if you fall, insurance will catch you.

“I want to remind people that they can sign up with me, or they can sign up with someone else. Either way, they must have insurance. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, but you’re putting everyone else at risk.”

Why Is the Right Insurance Coverage So Important?

Insurance is more than just a legal requirement or monthly expense. At the end of the day, it’s a safeguard against the unexpected.  As Bobadilla’s experience shows, the true value of insurance becomes clear only after disaster strikes. Whether it’s your car, your home, or your belongings, having the right coverage can make all the difference for your financial future.
