Whether it’s your wallet, glasses, or keys, losing important items is never fun. This is especially true when you lose something like your insurance pink slip. They are small, flimsy and easy to misplace, but they are also mandatory for drivers to have on their person when on the road. If you cannot provide proof of insurance, it may result in hefty fines or affect your premiums. Not to worry, though! Here’s what you need to do if you lose your insurance pink slip.

What to Do if You Lose Your Insurance Pink Slip

The simple answer is to contact your isure broker immediately. If you have a current (active) policy, your isure broker can give you a replacement as soon as possible. Furthermore, Ontario now offers electronic access to your insurance pink slip to streamline the process. Be proactive; the sooner your provider knows, the sooner you receive your new slip.

There are rare instances when, instead of a slip that lasts your entire policy, you receive a temporary slip, or a ’30-day binder’. You will only be given a 30-day binder if you are creating a new policy. Your provider will issue you a temporary slip until the insurance company approves your new policy.

What is a Pink Slip?

“Pink slip” is a common term for your vehicle registration or ownership document. It proves the vehicle is registered to you and is often required when selling the car, renewing registration, or dealing with insurance or the police.

Is It Illegal to Lose a Pink Slip?

No. Losing it isn’t illegal, but you are generally required to replace it. Driving without proof of registration can result in a ticket if you’re stopped.

How Much Does a Replacement Pink Slip Cost?

Usually, replacing a lost pink slip costs around $32 in Ontario.

What If Your Pink Slip is Stolen?

If it was stolen, report it to the local police. You may need to provide a police occurrence number or a replacement declaration when replacing it at ServiceOntario.

Can You Use Digital Insurance Proof?

Ontario now allows official digital proof of insurance from your insurer (not just a photo). However, this applies to insurance cards, not the vehicle permit itself.

Can You Still Drive Without One?

Yes, however, you should carry proof of insurance (your insurance “pink card”) when driving. Not having it can result in a fine, as it is mandatory to drive with proof of valid insurance.

Lost Pink Slips: What to Remember

Thanks to the new digital era, you can say goodbye to flimsy pink slips. Having a digital copy of your pink slip on your phone makes it easier to access and harder for you to lose. That being said, there are some restrictions. Unfortunately, a picture of the slip is not enough. You must have an official copy, whether physical or digital, directly from an insurance broker or carrier.

Final Thoughts

The moral of the story is, don’t get caught without your pink slip! We recommend keeping both a digital copy and a backup physical copy, in case you encounter issues with the digital copy. Here at isure, we do our best to ensure our clients have everything they need to drive safely and legally.
