These entities used legitimate business fronts and fraudulent paperwork to ship a large number of stolen vehicles to markets worldwide, particularly in the Middle East and West Africa.

So far, the impact of Project Chickadee has been significant. Recently, Project Chickadee has successfully dismantled a sophisticated international auto theft ring, recovering 306 stolen vehicles valued at $25 million. This was done by targeting a fraudulent freight-forwarding company, rather than the car thieves themselves.
This bust is expected to do wonders for stabilizing Canada’s auto insurance market. This is achieved by reducing large-scale losses, which have surged 371% since 2014. Ultimately, this can reduce premium pressure for drivers in high-theft regions, such as Toronto.
Project Chickadee And Insurance

Project Chickadee is a massive win so far. However, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) warns that the industry as a whole cannot afford to be complacent. Project Chickadee continues to send a message to thieves and crime ring organizers that the border is no longer an easy exit for stolen vehicles. However, the IBC claims that staying proactive remains the best defence against both theft and rising insurance costs.
Liam McGuinty, the vice-president of Federal Affairs at the Insurance Bureau of Canada, welcomed the action and applauded the implications for insurers. However, he noted that though law enforcement efforts have contributed to a recent decline in auto theft, the problem remains.
To maintain momentum, McGuinty and the IBC are advocating for stricter oversight of freight forwarders. This ensures they aren’t used as export hubs for crime. Additionally, they are pushing to continue updating vehicle safety standards. This, in turn, makes modern cars harder to steal using the popular electronic relay methods.
